Students peer over the USS Mis
Sixteen sixth graders and four staff from Kualapuu Elementary School took a field trip the weekend of Sept. 15-16 where they participated in an encampment aboard the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor.

The kids had the opportunity to experience life aboard the ship as they spent the night of Sept. 15 on board. Students learned that the ship's bow faces the Arizona Memorial because it's protecting the USS Arizona. Normally ships are turned to face out to sea.

The kids also learned the significance of having both the Arizona and the Missouri in the same harbor, representing the beginning and end of World War II.

The field trip was sponsored through a grant with PBS Hawaii and the USS Missouri Memorial Association. The trip was coordinated with Ken Burns' new documentary "The War."

The VIPs aboard (sponsors, CEOs, etc.) and the kids and adults participated with veterans of different wars in a discussion session. The students also saw a preview of the soon-to-be-released documentary.
