San Diego-based musicians BSan Diego-based musicians Bill Corwin and Sandra Strand came to Molokai this week to vacation. They ended up outside Mrs. K's at 9 a.m. playing an odd concoction of Hawaiian and zydeco with Uncle Kelii Mawae.
Corwin, a retired video technician, plays zydeco accordion with his band, The Swamp Critters outside San Diego while his wife, Strand, is a public school music teacher in the city.
Zydeco and Cajun music originate in New Orleans. The music is accordion-driven, usually featuring fiddle and accordion, sometimes with vocals and a triangle in the background. The music is soulful, but driven. The lyrics are traditionally in French.
The trio played together for a new KMKK 102.3 FM music show on the horizon, featuring local and visiting musicians.
