In the wake of the shutdown of Molokai Ranch, I was looking at the Molokai Responsible Tourism Initiative - Community-Based Visitor Plan. It stated that its goal is “to develop a five-year plan for sustainable tourism on Molokai in order to increase jobs and small business opportunities for residents. The level of expansion needs to be acceptable to Molokai residents, respectful of the
Native Hawaiian culture, and protective of the island’s natural resources.” Peter Apo is quoted:
“Community Tourism is defined as a process by which a community is empowered to share its greatness while preserving its dignity. It is small in scale and driven by a
genuine desire of a community to share itself, its history, traditions, and customs with strangers, as a means by which to support economic growth.”
It states that an increase in locally-owned bed and breakfasts is one of the indicators that the plan is succeeding. The plan also encourages agro-tourism and farm stays.
I think these are all great ideas. I sincerely hope County Council Representative Danny Mateo and Mayor Charmaine Tavares are willing to step up to the plate and use creative thinking to help Molokai residents be legally able to operate small scale home businesses and bed and breakfasts. As the big businesses shut down, people can become entrepreneurs and start their own small businesses. I hope our elected representatives can see past this counties zoning quagmire, and do what is best for Molokai residents in this difficult economic time.
