As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a fire that burned more than 25 acres near Maunaloa Highway in the mountains of the Puunana area, south of Maunaloa, is under control. Sgt. Tim Meyer of the Molokai Police Department said Tuesday afternoon that the blaze had been subdued and that firefighters were finishing clean-up operations.

Ten state, 10 county and 12 local firefighters were called to the scene near mile marker 12 West around noon Tuesday. Fire crews were aided by two helicopters, heavy equipment, and a water tanker. No injuries are reported and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. This is the third fire so far in 2008.

The island has received far below average precipitation so far this year and drought conditions persist.

Mahalo again to our courageous firefighters for keeping this blaze relatively small despite rough terrain and strong trade winds.

it would be interesting to know how the fire started. They don't start by themselves!!!

I keep hearing this drumbeat that we've had a dry year and we're in a drought. I have a NWS approved rain gauge and This rainy season has been just about average for the West End...about 17 inches...but most of it came at the end of last year . Last year's season was dry, for sure, at under 10", but the two years before that were well above average. It frequently is pretty dry by this time of year but the windward side of the pali is still pretty green as of yesterday.

As with nearly every summer, fire danger will be high on most of Moloka'i's lower leeward slopes.
