Molokai Ranch seeking to ‘dispose of’ its water utility By Kate Gardiner 5/7/2008 8:52:11 PM
At Monday's meeting of the Molokai Action Team — appointed by Governor Linda Lingle to seek solutions to the island's long-term economic challenges — the group changed its focus. Instead, team leader and the Hawaii Office of Planning director Abbey Mayer revealed details about the operations of Molokai Properties Limited, its subsidiaries and water on Molokai's West End. Mayer said the Ranch approached the state of Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, which licensed the Ranch as a public utility for two water companies and a sewage company. He says the Ranch wants to "dispose of" all of its water and sewage utilities. Molokai Ranch operates another unregulated water company and two unregulated sewage companies. Combined, these companies, subsidiaries of Molokai Properties Limited, operate the water systems for Kualapu'u, Kaluakoi and Maunaloa. The only apparent entities that would be willing to take over the six companies are either the state or the county. According to Mayer and Maui County Councilmember Danny Mateo, also a member of the Molokai Action Team, a meeting was held last week between Molokai's governmental representatives, MPL and Lingle. The governor and her staff believe that the water systems should be the responsibility of the county. Stay tuned to www.molokaitimes.com for updates throughout the week.

I think this is a GREAT chance for the people of Molokai they have been looking for a new source of jobs. So why don't the people of Molokai run and operate the water and sewage plants ??? Step up Molokai and I love the comment about the fish ponds. GO Walter, the people of Molokai have hitched their wagons to wrong guy and thing are only going to get worse allot worse Scott 5/13/2008, 8:01:32 AM |
Here we go! The governor wants to bail out the Ranch and make the County taxpayers put up the bill for improvements and maintenance of the wastewater and water systems. Tell me why should the Ranch be allowed to burden the taxpayers with the water utilities and yet get to keep everything else? Why not give the Kaluakoi Hotel to the County? Maybe we could use it for low income housing!

Why dwell on "What the ranch buildings will look like". It's in the past, what's in the future is what counts!!!

i feel sad about that beautiful ranch building. who will look after it. the termites? the whole infrostructure supporting the kaluakoi and ke nani kai residents and any homes on the west side, who is responsible for this now? meetings about this are fine, but something needs to be DONE soon. too many meetings, not enough action.

I wonder what "dispose" is defined as in Ranch vocabulary. If "mothball" is to board everything up and leave their failed crap in a heap, I'm scared to think what to dispose means
